Emilie Simon (USA/France)

Experimental/Pop/Singer-Songwriter

A French-born musician, author and artist, Emilie Simon has been called by critics as “France’s answer to Iceland's alternative pop princess Björk." Writing, composing and producing the bulk of her work herself, Simon’s combination of cutting-edge electronic theory and a strong background in classical music gives her work a unique voice. Simon came onto the scene with her 2003 debut album Emilie Simon, released to critical acclaim and being awarded a Victoire de la Musique (the French equivalent to the Grammys) award for electronic album of the year.

Soon after, Simon made a splash in the world of film when documentary filmmaker Luc Jacquet brought her on to score the immersive 2005 award-winning documentary MARCH OF THE PENGUINS. The groundbreaking soundtrack earned Simon her second Victoire de la Musique award and was nominated for a Cesar. Featuring sounds of cracking ice caps and other elemental source recordings, the soundtrack went on to be released by Universal Music as her second album. Simon then released her third album, Végétal, where she weaves the sounds of plants alongside a rock & roll sound. Following up Végétal, she went on to release three more albums including her English debut with The Big Machine.

More recently, Simon has been focused on her work in the film and theater space, composing the soundtrack for the Audrey Tautou-led drama LA DÉLICATESSE. She also composed the score for John Turturro’s 2019 American crime-comedy film THE JESUS ROLLS, starring Turturro alongside an ensemble of Audrey Tautou, Bobby Cannavale, Susan Sarandon, Jon Hamm, Pete Davidson and Christopher Walken among others

Simon has gone on to collaborate with artists across the globe, including American singer-songwriter Chris Isaak, prolific French composer Michel Legrand and musicians/producers who have worked with Rihanna, The Clash, David Bowie, Lana Del Rey, The Weeknd, & The Strokes among others. Artists including Thievery Corporation and Le Tigre have also remixed Simon’s music.

In October, Simon releases her latest transmedia project composed of an EP, short film, novel and a performance. Lily Mercier’s story about her return to life.
